Amid the fast-changing and round-the-clock relief efforts for Haiti, Humane Society International has assembled a team of trained veterinary experts to enter Port au Prince in the coming 48 hours. The team representing HSI, The HSUS and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Assn., is partnering with a group in the Dominican Republic, Veterinary Care & Humane Services, Caribbean Project (VCHS).
Our HSI/HSUS/HSVMA field responders include a French-speaking veterinarian and a paramedic trained in disaster response and animal handling. They will be accompanied by two veterinary technicians from VCHS and a translator. The team will provide immediate animal care as it can, and also assess conditions for animals in the capitol city and surrounding areas. As circumstances permit, our experts will also advise emergency and relief workers on extra steps they might take in the coming days to alleviate the suffering of animals while the desperate work to help the island’s human population continues.

Before you donate to the HSUS cash cow and its mooing for money for Haiti, please take a moment to read and article from The Horse where the writer interviewed a member of the HSI (the international arm of HSUS) damage assessment team on the ground in Haiti. To read the article, it sounds as if there are no significant animal issues that have arisen as a result of the earthquake. Yes, there were animal issues predating the earthquake, Haiti is, after all, a third world country. But no "crisis" for the animal from the earthquake. I would be curious how many millions of dollars HSUS/HSI spent in Haiti on animal relief prior to December 2009? Not much I would wager. Please, before you give HSUS/HSI one dime, please read the interview at http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=15711 and ask yourself some questions about where this money will really go. The smae questions have been asked after Hurricane Katrina, Michael Vick, and the 2009 Midwest dogfighting busts.
