Rest in Peace Barbaro
For the last eight months the world has been closely watching an extraordinary effort to save an amazing race horse. Sadly, yesterday morning ended Barbaro's race to survive. His owners and veterinarian determined that he could not live his life without pain. Full article here.

This makes me so incredibly sad. I was hoping and praying he'd pull through after all this time.

This is a VERY sad and unfortunate thing. Being the owner of a retired racing Throughbred it bothers me to see this. My mare was raced hard and was a winner. Unfortunattely she started to slow doen a bit and was thrown into the "pile" so to speak. Well I rescued her at four years old, with arthritis. Her discomfort managed quite well with great supplements and she is a very happy girl. I just think that it is BARBARIC that these horses are pumped with drugs and supplements to force their growth so they can be ridden TO YOUNG. Barbaro was a beautiful colt, and it is greed, and stupidity that ended this animals life prematurely.

wow that's a point I never thought of (about the horse's age)

I agree with Jil, theu should not be racing horses at such a young age.

what i meant to say is, i agree with jil. they should also not be racing horses at such a young age. i have grown up on the back of a horse, and we don't even put a saddle on them until they're at least 2 1/2.

i know right i bet if they gave the horse couple days i bet he would of made it if they didn't have surgerys so close together to also i was at the 2007 kentucky derby and when the owner person got flowers she looked like she didn't care about the horse at all
